When Irritation Becomes a Launching Pad for Purpose

Have you ever wondered why something bothers you so much? Other people seem to move right past it, but you keep thinking about it. The person who feels overlooked. The opportunity someone never received. The problem everybody talks about, but nobody seems willing to address. Sometimes, what irritates us deserves a closer look. It may hold a clue to our design, point us toward our purpose, and move us to make a meaningful difference.

A Fresh Reminder of What Was Planted Years Ago

My recent reading of Dr. Daniel E. Haupt’s SHAPED for Destiny was especially reaffirming. It brought me back to the mentoring I received years ago from Dr. Robert Earl Brown and his wife, Pastor Linda K. Brown. As I read, I found myself revisiting what they had poured into me and considering how those lessons continue to shape my understanding of purpose. There is something beautiful about encountering a message that gives fresh language to something planted in you years earlier. It reminded me to pay attention to what consistently stirs my heart—and to consider what I am going to do with that awareness.

Pay Attention to What Keeps Stirring Your Heart

Now, let’s be honest. Every irritation is not an assignment. Sometimes we need rest. Sometimes we need to adjust our expectations, address a hurt, or establish a boundary. We can learn something from our feelings without allowing them to make every decision for us. But there are concerns that keep returning, even after we have settled ourselves. We see a need, and something within us says, This matters. Someone deserves better. There has to be a way to help. That's worth exploring.

If it bothers you when people struggle to understand something, perhaps you have a gift for making things clear. If you keep noticing people who are left out, you may have a heart for creating spaces where they belong. If a confusing process frustrates you, your ability to organize may help someone else move forward.

The irritation alone does not tell the whole story. Look at it alongside your gifts, experiences, values, and the needs around you. Where do those threads connect? What do people already come to you for? What are you willing to learn so that your concern can become useful?

Turn Your Concern Into a Meaningful Step

This is where we begin moving from reaction to intention.

We can spend so much energy talking about what is wrong that we never explore what we can contribute. Purpose begins to take shape when we pause long enough to ask, Why does this matter so deeply to me, and what is one constructive step I can take?

You do not have to solve the entire problem. You might encourage one person, offer a skill, start a conversation, or volunteer where the work is already happening. Small steps give us opportunities to learn. They help us discover whether a concern is calling for our involvement and how we can serve well.

Make Room for Your Own Wellbeing

And sometimes the first step is within us. Before we ask what we can do about a concern, we may need to ask how we are doing. Have we been carrying too much? Putting ourselves last? Moving through life so quickly that we barely notice what we need?

The same irritation can invite us to look in more than one direction. It may reveal something we care deeply about, while also showing us where we need rest, support, or room to grow. Paying attention to ourselves helps us respond with greater clarity.

This is where purpose and wholeness meet.

Six Wellness Factors One Whole YOU

The YOU Matter Framework brings that connection into focus: Six Wellness Factors. One Whole YOU. Wholeness is not about getting every part of life perfectly balanced. It is about understanding how the different parts of our wellbeing work together and recognizing where we may need greater attention.

We can care deeply about making a difference and still need care ourselves. We can have gifts to share and still be learning how to nurture the person carrying those gifts. Our purpose has room for our own wellbeing, too.

That is the heart of The YOU Matter Journey™—an invitation to reconnect with who you are, nurture your whole self, and move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose. Somewhere between caring for others, meeting expectations, navigating change, and keeping life moving, it can become easy to lose sight of yourself.

Your Journey Can Begin With What You Notice

Perhaps something that has been bothering you is inviting you to pay attention again.

Take a moment to ask yourself: What keeps stirring my heart? What might need greater attention in my own life? What is one thoughtful step I can take?

You do not need to have every answer today. Begin by noticing. Give yourself permission to listen, learn, and explore. What once frustrated you may become a launching pad for a meaningful change in your life and in the lives you touch.

And as you consider what comes next, remember this:

YOU Matter. Not because of what you do. Because of who you are.

If you recognize yourself in these words, I invite you to begin The YOU Matter Journey™ by exploring the six wellness factors. Notice where you feel supported and where you could use greater attention. If you would like someone to walk alongside you as you reflect and take your next steps, my coaching services offer space for that conversation.
